PALGHAR: A massive fire at the Adivasi Vikas Mahamandal warehouse in Jawhar Taluka, Palghar district, destroyed around 80-90 tons of rice early Tuesday morning.
The rice had been recently purchased from local villagers during the buying season.
Local residents were the first to respond to the incident, followed by fire brigade and police personnel.
Four water tankers from Boisar and Dahanu fire stations were deployed to control the blaze.
The fire spread quickly through the brown cloth sacks storing the rice. Emergency responders used poclain excavators to separate unaffected rice sacks from the burning ones.
The full extent of the damage will be determined after government officials conduct a panchanama investigation.
"We were informed about the fire to our godown at Ghol Patil pada and accordingly we alerted the cops and the fire brigade department. Once the panchanam is conducted we shall arive at the final numbers in terms of losses incurred," said an official from the Adivasi Vikas Mahamandal.
The warehouse, operated by the Adivasi Vikas Mahamandal, serves as a storage facility for rice purchased from local villagers in the Palghar district.
