FIR after 4 hours, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule’s son Sanket called after 14 hours: Opposition slams Nagpur Audi car crash probe

NAGPUR: Two days after a crash involving an Audi owned by BJP state chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule’s son Sanket after coming out of a Nagpur pub, the Opposition questioned the police probe, alleging lapses in the process of registering FIR.

The crash injuring two scooterists had led to a confrontation and a chase during which Sanket Bawankule slipped away — and then spared by police, according to the opposition.

“The accident happened post-Sunday midnight and an FIR was filed at 4.30am, but police did not record the registration number,” said Sena UBT leader Sushma Andhare who was among the opposition netas who visited the police station where the case has been registered. The initial report had even left the driver unidentified and the SUV was taken to a garage instead of being kept in police custody.

The other occupants in the SUV were booked for drunk and dangerous driving while Sanket was not named. Sanket was summoned for a statement 14 hours later.

Andhare also accused deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and the BJP state chief of using coercion to derail the inquiry. She alleged that the complainant, a Dalit, was being coerced to withdraw FIR.

Nagpur DCP Rahul Madane revealed that Sanket Bawankule, son of Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, confessed to being in a car involved in an accident on September 9. The driver was arrested for rash driving and later released on bail. Medical samples have been sent for forensic analysis.

BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son's AudiQ8 was intercepted post-accident. Two occupants were mobbed, thrashed, and taken to Timki before police rescued them. Both were found intoxicated. Authorities are investigating the incident, analyzing CCTV footage from various locations for additional evidence.

State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule denied allegations of influencing the police investigation into a hit-and-run incident involving his son Sanket in Nagpur. He asserted that he has not communicated with any officials regarding the case and urged for impartial police action. The opposition accuses BJP of covering up the incident.
