Family members allege youth tortured, humiliated by cops, died by suicide

Nagpur: A youth died by suicide on Tuesday in Jaripatka area, after allegedly being humiliated and tortured by his father-in-law, who is a cop.
Carrying deceased Shantanu Walde’s body after the post mortem at Mayo Hospital, his family members, including father Narendra Walde, a former BSP corporator, protested in front of Pachpaoli police station on Wednesday, demanding action against the cop responsible for the tragedy.
Narendra alleged that his son was tortured by his father-in-law, who is deployed at Pachpaoli police station’s ‘maalkhana’. The deceased, Shantanu Walde, had hanged himself from the ceiling of his room.
Police said Shantanu was married to Ravi Gajbhiye’s daughter after the two fell in love. After a few days, the couple started getting into altercations. Consequently, she left her in-laws’ house at Jaripatka and went back to her paternal home at Pachpaoli.
On September 18, Shantanu went to the house of his in-laws and allegedly thrashed his wife. Following this, Gajbhiye filed an FIR against Shantanu at Pachpaoli police station. Shantanu was booked under sections 452, 323, 506 of IPC. He was arrested but released after he got bail from the court, said senior PI Vaibhav Jadhav.
It is alleged that the deceased was subjected to police torture, allegedly at the behest of Gajbhiye.
Jadhav said Walde committed suicide in area falling in the jurisdiction of Jaripatka police station. He said, “His suicide will be probed by Jaripatka police, where a case of accidental death was registered. The memorandum submitted by Walde family will be handed over to the cops.”
After getting assurance from senior PI Jadhav, the kin of the deceased left the police station and performed his last rites.
