Doctors remove coin battery swallowed by 4-year-old boy

NAGPUR: A Pusad farmer’s four-year-old son, who had accidentally swallowed a coin cell battery, which was the size of a 5 coin, three days ago, got it removed at GMCH’s paediatric surgery ward on Thursday. He is said to be out of danger.
After doctor in his area could not figure a solution for removing the battery swallowed by Anand Rathod, he was sent to GMC Yavatmal, from where he was referred to GMC Nagpur.He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. He will undergo treatment for three days to cure ulceration.
“After performing endoscopy, we noticed the formation of ulceration in the boy’s aesophagus. The battery had started leaking due to its contact with water. Moreover, the battery got stuck to the food pipe, where it caused ulceration. The battery was removed through the use of force baskets,” said Dr Sudhir Gupta from department of gastroenterology, GMCH and Super Speciality Hospital. The patient will now undergo treatment at the ward for three days to cure ulceration, after which he will be discharged.
“The chances of bleeding in such cases are high, but luckily, the it didn’t happen in the case of the boy and he is now stable. He is now being given proton pump inhibitor and sucrol syrup,” said Dr Gupta. The syrup is required to work as an ulcer coating agent, he added.
“It is not a rare case but infection caused due to battery is rare,” said Dr Gupta. He added, “It could have perforated, and the condition would have deteriorated. Erosion, gastrointestinal bleeding and other complications were avoided due to timely treatment.”
About two years ago, a three-inch nail was removed with double balloon enteroscopy.
