On the second day of the conference on Saturday, many shared their views in the backdrop of the recent ICMR study which states that India has more than 101 million people living with diabetes compared to the 70 million in 2019.

“While genetics and childhood malnutrition are among the leading causes, central obesity is the most significant factor contributing to diabetes among Indians. We are witnessing an increase in weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, which is the worst kind,” stated veteran endocrinologist Dr Vijay Negalur.

Dr Nihal Thomas from Vellore’s Christian Medical College highlighted the presence of distinctive types of diabetes more prevalent in India such as fibrocalcific pancreatic diabetes. “Indians tend to accumulate more fat around vital organs like the pancreas leading to the development of diabetes at a young age, as early as 25,” he explained.

Renowned sexologist Dr Deepak Jumani shed light on the impact of diabetes on sexual health. “Diabetes affects every vital organ in our body. Individuals with diabetes experience loss of sexual desire, ability, and often face erectile dysfunction. While medication is available, it is crucial to address the root cause, which is diabetes,” he emphasized.

Diabetologist Dr Vijay Panikar stressed on importance of mindful diabetes management as the key to tackling the disease. “Despite the negative perception, it is actually a golden age for diabetics. We have excellent medication that can potentially achieve diabetes’ remission,” he remarked.
