Despite NMC’s help, GMCH facing water shortage

NAGPUR: Until a couple of weeks ago, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) was facing huge water shortage. Officials of the hospital met municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar about it, which solved the problems partially. If the problem is not sorted out soon enough, the hospital may have to use its local funds to solve it.
The monthly water requirement of GMCH is 35 lakh litres, of which around 12 lakh litres was being supplied to the hospital until a couple of weeks ago.After the meeting with Hardikar, the water supply went up to 17 lakh litres. A lot of this water gets wasted because of leakages in pipeline of the hospital.
“Even if we bring down our requirements to a bare minimum, we would still need 20 lakh litres water a month. The pipeline of the college is very old which causes a lot of leakages. Saving this water could help us. However, it is something the PWD needs to work on,” said the PRO of the hospital Dr Girish Bhuyar.
If the task is taken up the PWD, though, it will involve issuing a tender that could take a long time. The college is now considering using funds from its personal ledger account or those from the students’ welfare society towards this cause to fix it at the earliest possible time.
