Dentists find right cure for root canal
Nagpur: Root canal treatments are often known to fail, mainly because of use of the wrong technique. With the right technique, though, the success rate of the procedure can be more than 95%.
Dentists from the city had a lesson in one such technique pioneered by Mumbai-based endodontist Dr Anish Naware. City branch of Indian Dental Association (IDA) organized his lecture and video demonstration of the ‘i-endo’ technique, recently.

The new team of IDA, Nagpur, also took charge on the day.
“The success rate of the conventional root canal procedures is around 50%. Use of techniques like crown down increases the success rate, and i-endo takes it up to more than 95%. The files used in the conventional technique were prone to breaking. We now have a new kind of files called rotary files that are unbreakable and have much better precision,” said Dr Naware. He added that the technique saves time, pain and causes much less pain.
The technique basically does away with all the reasons that scare people off dental treatment. It also consists of a methodology called ‘i-post’ that is used to mend broken teeth. This consists of a metal structure that can be put inside the broken teeth to raise their height so that their functionality can be restored. This, too, is made up of materials that have high tensile strength. The metals used in the conventional method tend to break off themselves, and in some cases can even cause a part of the teeth to be chipped off. This can be avoided using this new technique.
The mechanical research on the technique has been completed and the dentist fraternity is all up for the biological research. “This is a better technique of performing root canal procedure and we wanted the dentists in the city to be well versed with it,” said Dr Vaibhav Karemore, the convener of the programme.
IDA new team installed
The new team of Nagpur branch of Indian Dental Association took charge, recently. The team aims to reach out to the community and
spread the word about the importance of dental hygiene, especially among kids.
Dr Zubair Quazi handed over the responsibilities of the president of IDA, Nagpur, to Dr Sandip Fuladi. Dr Girish Bhutada took over as the secretary, and Dr Ketan Garg as the new treasurer. During the installation ceremony, 35 awards were given out to dental students as well as practising dentists for their achievements through the year.
“We plan to train schoolteachers about oral and dental hygiene, with the expectation that they would carry it forward to the students,” said Dr Fuladi. He added that the organization will also be focusing on spreading awareness about oral diseases, and especifically on the ill effects of tobacco consumption.
Dr Bhutada said that at the same time, the academic activities of the members will also be high on their agenda. “We will have some internationally renowned faculties coming for our annual conference this year. Topics that have gained importance in recent times like full mouth rehabilitation will also be dealt with,” he said.
