NAGPUR:State information commission (SIC) on Saturday has served a show cause notice to city police chief SP Yadav, allowing a two-week’s time, seeking clarification for not updating its official website. Citizen activist Ankita Shah had earlier sought an intervention of the commission under section 18 (1) of Right to Information Act, 2005, which empowers the body to enquire into a complaint.

Ankita has claimed in her complaint that she was left hassled and bore financial loss after a registered post in the name of senior inspector SK Jaiswal of Lakadganj police station returned stating that there was no such person by that name present there. It was later learnt by Ankita that Jaiswal had already retired couple of months ago and has been replaced by incumbent PI SB Mane.
Ankita said that she had sent the registered post in the name of Jaiswal as city police’s website ‘nagpurpolice.info’ still showed him as the senior PI and not Mane. “Citizens’ right to information cannot be taken for granted and important government departments like police too cannot skirt its responsibility to update its website. There can be legal problems coming up with such redundant information available on websites,” said the law student.
Ankita claimed that section 4 of RTI Act warrants a government department to keep its websites and official portals updated and well maintained. “The city is reeling under crime but the statistics available on the site fails to reflect the current scenario,” she said.
