AMRAVATI: In a first for the city, commissioner of police Ajit Patil convened a meeting of idol makers and directed them to make only eco-friendly Ganesh idols to prevent pollution of water bodies.
Every year, the police department conducts a meeting with the various mandals in the city ahead of the Ganesh festival. The police chief briefs them on the do's and don'ts during this period.

However, going a step further and perhaps showing a concern for the environment, CP Ajit Patil also convened a meeting of idol makers to promote eco-friendly idols. The Ganesh festival will be celebrated from September 19 to 29 this year.
Around 60-70 idol makers were present at the meeting. Patil appealed them not to use insoluble colours, and avoid selling Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols. He also directed them not to set up shops on roadsides to avoid any desecration of the idol. The police chief declared that Ganesh idols can be put up on sale at Science-core ground, Dasra Maidan, Nehru Maidan, Rural Institute, Sporting Club and Rajapeth only.
