Nagpur: The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected MahaMetro’s car maintenance depot in Mihan, which is being used for the last five years without mandatory clearance, and found various shortcomings.
TOI had on September 4 reported MahaMetro using the depot for maintenance of Metro trains for the last five years despite it not being approved by the CMRS.
Three walls of the facility have tilted and the giant cement concrete structure has developed cracks, apart from water seepage and other faults. Also, some works are incomplete even today though the deadline lapsed five years ago.
It was only after TOI report that the MahaMetro invited CMRS for inspection on September 14.
Sources told TOI, “CMRS has suggested various modifications. We need to execute the works as suggested and submit compliance report. It will be only after that the CMRS will take decision and give approval.”
CMRS also inspected newly constructed Cotton Market Metro station on September 14 for bringing it to use and made some suggestions. MahaMetro completed the Cotton Market station works on top priority and announced opening of the station for commuters from September 21.
With the opening of Cotton Market Metro station, the number of stations in use will increase to 37. Aqua Line will have 20 and Orange Line 17 stations.
Under phase-I, work on one more station — Indora — is still on. PM Narendra Modi had performed bhoomipuja of the project in August 2014. The initial deadline to complete the project was three years. Once Indora station is ready, it will mark completion of the phase-I.
Recently, TOI reported track settlement (deformation) and cracks on four-decker bridge at Gaddigodam and Concor railway over bridge (RoB). MahaMetro had to reduce the speed of Metro from 80 kmph to 30 kmph for rectification works.
After carrying out the repairs, MahaMetro had normalized the Metro speed on Concor RoB. Speed on Gaddigodam bridge is being increased in phased manner and has been taken up to 50 kmph. However, the speed was normalized without inspection and approval of the CMRS.
Though the MahaMetro had not informed about the defects at these two places, the CMRS inspected Concor RoB and Gaddigodam bridge suo motu on September 14.
Sources say the CMRS seemed satisfied over the rectification works at Concor RoB and Gaddigodam bridge.

The Western Railway in Mumbai will be closing the staircase on the northern side of the middle foot over-bridge (FOB) at Kandivali railway station from September 22. This is to allow for the widening of the FOB by four meters on the northern side as part of station improvement work. Passengers will still be able to use the staircase on the southern side of the FOB during construction.
