City’s Super Speciality Hospital set to gain full academic status

Nagpur: The Super Speciality Hospital is finally set to attain full academic status, with four additional departments likely to be granted postgraduate (PG) seats shortly. For several years, the institution—originally conceived as a PG medical institute—functioned largely as a healthcare service centre, with only limited PG training.

At present, PG seats are available in three departments - Cardiology (four seats), Gastroenterology (two seats), and Neurosurgery (four seats). Following recent inspections by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Endocrinology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS), Pulmonary Medicine, and Urology are each expected to receive two PG seats. Once approved, PG training will be available across seven departments, making the hospital a fully postgraduate teaching institution.


Meanwhile, several other upgrades are progressing at a brisk pace. The hospital has acquired an MRI machine, which is expected to become operational within a month. It already provides sonography and CT scan services. With all three major imaging facilities available in-house, patients will no longer need referrals to the Govt Medical College (GMC), reducing waiting lists there and ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment.

Currently, the sonography unit operates near the OPD area. Once separate facilities are created for CT scan, sonography, and MRI, the existing sonography space will be freed up. The hospital administration plans to use this area to expand the OPD, which has become inadequate due to the rising patient load. The OPD expansion is expected to be completed within a few months.

As part of the infrastructure upgrade, a dedicated transplant operation theatre (OT) has been developed on the fourth floor of the hospital. Additional OTs have also been constructed on the third floor. Equipped with modern facilities, these OTs will allow transplant and other surgeries to be conducted simultaneously, reducing waiting times for patients. Further, a cath lab and cardiology ICCU have been set up on the first floor, with work now completed. Overall, the hospital is undergoing extensive modernisation.

"The new expansions will help provide even better facilities to patients. Being the only government institution of its kind in Central India, a large number of patients will benefit. A shed has also been constructed near the Nuclear Medicine Department for relatives to stay, offering much-needed relief. Work on the C-2 wing has also begun," said a senior official.
