NAGPUR: With the dubious distinction of being called the ‘kharra’ capital, Nagpur has the highest 15.7% males who are suffering from
mouth cancer
in Vidarbha. Females are also not far behind with 5.1% cases, the third highest, who are victims of mouth cancer caused mainly due to
tobacco chewing
. These are the figures Rashtrasant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital has arrived at after collecting data in the region.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Dr BK Sharma, director of
RST Regional Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
(RST RCH), said, “According to the data, around 80% of mouth
cancer deaths
occur due to tobacco chewing. Going by the trend, it is quite possible that the number of deaths by cancer will double in the coming four years.”
Meanwhile, the hospital will conduct a continuing medical education (CME) programme on ‘Head and neck cancers — recent updates’ in association with Cancer Relief Society, Indian Medical Association and other organizations on Sunday. A discussion on latest pathological methods on diagnosis of head and neck cancer to its management by surgery, radiology and medical oncology will be held.
A special workshop on ‘Advance radiotherapy techniques in head and neck cancers’ has also been organized for medical physicists. Anil D’cruz and Prathmesh Pai from Mumbai and Moni Kuriakose from Bengaluru, besides others, will address the conference.
