NAGPUR: The body of Puja
Gupta (24) was finally found after two days on Saturday morning. It was found by some rag pickers near the point where Kalamnanullah
meets the Pili
river. The body was stuck in some bushes. The rag pickers informed former corporator
of the area SheshraoGotmare
who in turn called the police. The body was fished out by the fire brigade in the morning and the body was sent for post mortem to Mayo Hospital in the afternoon.
Gotmare said that for the last two days frantic efforts to find the girl's body was made by everyone. "We had carried out a search operation using boats too, but to no avail," he said.
On the fateful evening Puja, who hails from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, was coming to Nagpur from her sister's place in Amgaon to her uncle Dinesh Gupta's home. She had just completed her BTech from Delhi and was coming to Nagpur for a counselling session for MTech.
She did not even reach her uncle's house, before she could be safe and warm there, she was taken away by the floods. The auto in which she and her younger sister Priyanshi were travelling dropped her on the bridge over the nullah, on the other side of which was her uncle's house. Even though water was already flowing over the bridge she decided to cross it along with Priyanshi and Abhishek Mishra (10) who was also there.
"She was reportedly warned by some people, but she did not pay heed to them. She and the little boy were washed away while Priyanshi was rescued by some youths present there. After the accident we cordoned off the area and did not allow people to cross the bridge," said Gotmare.
The parents of the girls were in Fatehpur. Puja's father
Rajendra Prasad Gupta runs a medical shop in Fatehpur. "They have come here. The girls have a younger brother who is studying. It was a shock for Priyanshi to see her elder sister being swept away in the water," said Jitendra Sahu, relative of Dinesh Gupta.
Meanwhile, the rains subsided in the region, but not before wreaking havoc. On Thursday 176 homes in Bhandara were damaged due to rains, taking the toll of damaged houses in the season to 2,018. In Wardha, state minister Ranjit Kamble visited Umra village which had been cut off from the city and other villages.
