NAGPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a counter-protest at Vidhan Bhavan premises in response to the Congress and opposition parties’ demonstration a day earlier against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Congress had accused Shah of making remarks disrespectful to Dr B R Ambedkar, sparking a political clash.

Led by senior leaders including Pankaja Munde, Pravin Datke, Girish Mahajan, Mohan Mate, Ashish Deshmukh, among others, the BJP hit back with placards and slogans such as "Ambedkarancha Virodh Ha Congress cha DNA" (Opposition to Babasaheb Ambedkar is in Congress's DNA) and "Samvidhan viroshi Congress hay hay" (Anti-Constitution Congress, down with you).

The party alleged that Congress had a history of neglecting Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions and exploiting his name for political gains.

Speaking at the protest, BJP leader Girish Mahajan defended Amit Shah and accused the Congress of deliberately misinterpreting his statement. "The Congress twisted Shah’s remarks to create unnecessary controversy.

This is typical of their politics, which thrives on chaos and misdirection," Mahajan said. He further asserted that the BJP-led Mahayuti government respects Dr Ambedkar’s legacy and is committed to preserving constitutional values.

The BJP leaders criticized the Congress for alleged hypocrisy, pointing to instances like the Emergency of 1975 as evidence of their disregard for democratic principles. "The Congress has no moral authority to lecture on democracy or Ambedkar’s legacy when their past actions contradict their claims," said Mahajan.

Mahajan also accused the Congress of resorting to "disruptive politics" under Rahul Gandhi's leadership. "Their protest is nothing but a diversionary tactic to distract from their failures. Even our MPs were injured during their unruly demonstrations," he alleged.

Friday’s protest underscored the BJP’s counter-narrative as a staunch defender of Dr. Ambedkar’s principles, while labeling Congress’s demonstrations as opportunistic and politically motivated. The exchange has further escalated tensions between the ruling and opposition parties in the ongoing winter session of the state legislature.
