AMRAVATI: Despite a ban on carrying more than three persons in an auto, the drivers have cramming the vehicle with more numbers and plying from interior parts of the city to avoid police eye.
A seminar was conducted by the police department for auto drivers in November and had directed them to comply with rules. The cops had also formulated one fare chart and asked the automen not to exploit the people.
After this, the auto drivers hiked the fare from Rs 7 to Rs 10 per seat and started following rules. But after two months, they started adjusting at least five seats at a hiked rate of Rs 10 per person.
Commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar said that the police had taken action against 222 automen for violating rules till last week and assured to intensify the drive. Now, to skip police action, the auto drivers are plying from interior areas. They now pass through Prashant Nagar, Congress Nagar, Yashoda Nagar and other areas where traffic cops are not deployed.
Jayesh Sonarkar, a daily commuter, said that he enjoyed a comfortable ride. Later, the autowallahs started cramming more than four or five persons and continued to charge Rs 10, he said.
