NAGPUR: Use of Laser has revolutionized treatment of many vision related problems. One such Laser surgery, called Lasik (short for Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is being introduced by one of the senior most ophthalmologists of the city, Dr Praful Mokadam in his Ramdaspeth Hospital.
Lasik basically is a optional treatment, opted mainly by youngsters to do away with spectacles or contact lenses by correcting the refractive error (inability of the eye to focus parallel rays of light on the retina while viewing distant objects).

It should ideally be done between the age of 18-40 years.
Procedure costing Rs 35,000 will now be available at the Lasik Laser Centre of Anjani Eye Hospital. The centre will be formally inaugurated by Dr Sudha Sutaria, senior most ophthalmologist of the region and municipal commissioner Shyam Wardhane on Sunday at 10 am. "There are just two other Lasik machines in the city. But ours, the MEL 80 from Carl Zeiss makes the procedure more accurate and precise. Lasik is good for young spectacle users having very high minus power," said Dr Mokadam.
Dr Shweta Mokadam, Dr Praful's daughter in-law, has specialized in the field with a fellowship training at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad. "Lasik basically improves the focus of the retina. First a micro-thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea. This layer is lifted backwards and preserved while the Laser sculpts out some portion of the cornea to give it a new shape that corrects the error. The flap is then replaced," she explained.
Dr Praful's younger son Dr Shamik, who specializes in retinal surgery, explained that there were basically three kinds of Lasers. First is a double frequency Yag Laser, also called green Laser using the light rays in visible spectrum and is used generally to seal the bleeding retina. Second, a Yag Laser used in conducting the conducting the cataract surgery using the infrared rays. Third is Lasik that uses ultraviolet rays for refractive correction.
The elder son of Dr Praful, Dr Shaunak pointed out that Lasik could perform customized procedures for every eye. "First the equipment maps the unique shape of the eye, picking up the imperfections and then corrects them as well," he said.
