AMRAVATI: The regional transport office (RTO) found itself in an embarrassing situation on Friday after it was reported that two auto-rickshaws bearing the same registration number were plying on Amravati roads. Later, a visibly upset regional transport officer H A Borkar admitted lapse on part of the department and clarified that the mistake was inadvertent. The controversy cropped up when Rahul Shankarrao Niswade, an auto driver from Pala, was summoned by the Amravati traffic police for carrying passengers exceeding the permissible limit.
Niswade was taken aback by the notice from traffic police as he ferried on the Pala-Morshi route and never took his auto to Amravati city. Later, he met the Amravati representative of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Atul Deshmukh and narrated the entire episode.
MNS workers then contacted various police stations across the district and learnt from the Gadge Nagar police that another auto owned by Mohammad Iqbal, being plied on Badnera Road, shares the same registration number as that of Niswade, sources said.MNC workers cross-checked the same with Borkar and brought the department's discrepancy to fore. The MNS workers met deputy commissioner of police P T Patil and requested him to take immediate action against the accused officials.
