NAGPUR: MADC vice-chairman R C Sinha has justified the plan to build a greenfield airport at Amravati city, stating that it was the second important city of Vidarbha after Nagpur. While there is a proposal to build a new airport there by acquiring 1,000 acres of land, he said a pilot training academy with private participation was also proposed there.
Sinha said Amravati as well as Chandrapur in Vidarbha were chosen for new airports under MADC’s plan to develop a regional air network.

The network would also include several other cities in the state, including Shirdi, Jalgaon, Phaltan, Solapur and Karad.
"We have sent technical teams to Amravati and Chandrapur to scout for land. In case of Amravati, the present airstrip of about 1,800 metres is unsuitable for landing of bigger aircraft. So, a 3,200 metre new runway would be built by acquiring about 400 hectares of land, he said.
The airport development would be through private investment, Sinha added. In Chandrapur, about 900 acres would be needed for the new airport.
On the laying of second runway-that would 4,000 metres long and 60 metres wide-for Mihan project, Sinha said global tenders were floated for consultants to design it.
Singapore’s Changi international company will be consulted for boosting efficiency of the present airport facilities, he said.
Sinha also allayed fears over the rehabilitation of project affected persons from Shivangaon and said they would be resettled at Chichbhavan where land acquisition process was already started and has reached upto section 6 stage of the Act.
