Akshaya Tritiya Boom: Jewellery Sales At Rs 150Cr, 2K Vehicles Sold

Nagpur: Celebrated as one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya triggered a citywide purchasing spree, with jewellery, vehicles, and retail markets witnessing heavy footfall. Regarded as one of the "three-and-a-half" muhurat, the day is considered a complete muhurat, making it ideal for initiating new ventures or buying valuables.True to its meaning — Akshaya, or eternal — the day is believed to bring lasting prosperity. This belief translated into brisk business across key commercial hubs, including Sarafa market in Itwari, Mahal market and Dharampeth main market, all of which remained abuzz well into the night. From gold and silver to clothing and consumer goods, buyers thronged shops in large numbers.On the spiritual front, many observed traditional rituals, including annadan, offering food to the needy and elderly. It is believed that ancestors descend to earth on this day, prompting acts of charity and remembrance.All India Gems and Jewellery Domestic Council president Rajesh Rokade noted that business picked up pace later in the day. "In most Maharashtrian households, poojas are conducted in the early afternoon. Due to the intense heat, people preferred stepping out in the evening. The rush continued till late at night," he said.Rokade added that while last year's total jewellery sales in Nagpur district stood at around 125 crore, this year the figure is expected to cross 150 crore. Despite prices touching 1.54 lakh per tola for 24-carat gold, demand remained strong, reflecting the cultural significance attached to the occasion. On Sunday, the rate of gold without GST was 1,54,200 per 10 grams, while silver was at 2,59,800 per kilogram.Traders across markets echoed similar sentiments. A jewellery shop owner from Itwari said, "Customers waited for the right moment post-pooja and then came in large numbers. Even high prices did not deter them." A retailer from Dharampeth, Aditya Dhere, added, "There was steady footfall throughout the evening with families buying clothes and gifts."The automobile sector also recorded a notable surge in sales. Vidarbha Automobile Dealers Association president Anuj Pandey said more than 500 four-wheelers were sold across Nagpur, with SUVs leading demand. "Entry-level cars saw relatively lower sales, while interest in electric vehicles is also steadily increasing," he said.
