AKOLA: The student verification drive in governmentfunded and government-run schools of Akola, Washim and Buldhana districts, as part of ongoing statewide exercise, has thrown up shockers. The extent of fudging students’ numbers by school managements to pocket government grants is appalling.
The government went in for students’ headcount after 1.35 lakh bogus students were found in government schools in Nanded district alone.
A school in Motala village in Buldhana district got visually-impaired and disabled students to make up for the class strength before the inspecting officials. Some of these students attended the school for the first time in their lives.
The muster showed two persons on Rs 100 daily wage as school employees. In Akot, the headmaster of Babu Jagjivan Ram School and the school management official searched for class 7, which as the rolls mentioned, had 26 students. But the squad found no such class in the school! Moreover, the students walked in to the schools two hours late despite the scheduled time being 7am.
The special squad had to wait for two hours for the students to come. In Buldhana, four students were taken to a municipal council school in Mirza Nagar to add to students’ strength.
The special squad took note of the fraud and submitted report to the district collector. Sources said, "The huge difference between the number of students on roll and those actually present in the school has hopelessly exposed many erring school management."
