‘Adulyadej was a king of people in true sense’

The programme, organized by Ahilyabai Holkar Multipurpose Education Society (AHMES), started with the ‘bhikkus’ chanting religious prayers in the late Buddhist king’s spirit. Speakers highlighted the life and works of Adulyadej and also about his journey as the longest reigning monarch and people’s king. Maharashtra minister for social welfare Rajkumar Badole, vice-president of AHMES Gagan Malik and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.
Adulyadej passed away on October 13, 2016. After a yearlong period of mourning, he was cremated as per royal Buddhist traditions in Thailand on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Malik spoke about Buddhism and its way of life. “The way we say Namo Buddhay, we should also greet people with Jai Bhim in respect of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as it was he who revived Buddhism in India. Buddhism has a way to connect with every religion. Buddhism preaches compassion, peace, love and harmony,” said Malik.
Aman Kamble, chief editor of Awaaz TV, spoke about Adulyadej and how Buddhism inspired his life. He appreciated AHMES for the efforts in organizing the programme.
Speakers at the event said that “We should reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of people. Adulyadej believed that real happiness is possible in serving others.”
Malik made the introductory remarks while Sudesh Bhowate hosted the programme. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Nitin Gajbhiye, secretary of AHMES.
