‘Act against those behind farmer suicides’

NAGPUR: The Nagpur bench of the

Bombay high court

recently asked the government on number of farmers committing suicides due to shortage of water, power and agriculture pumps.


A division bench of justices Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Zaka Haq directed it to take action against its authorities responsible for the circumstances that led farmers to end their lives.

The court was hearing a suo motu PIL (No 80/2014) on backlog of agriculture pumps in

Vidarbha

that led to farmers not being able to water their crops. The court had appointed Chandrashekhar Kaptan as

amicus curiae

assisted by Prithviraj Chavan in the case.

Justify spending on RSS HQ beautification: HC

The Nagpur bench of Bombay high court recently asked the NMC to justify splurging Rs1.37 crore on building a compound wall and internal roads of Dr Hedgewar Smarak Samiti in Reshimbag.

The court was hearing a PIL by social activist Janardhan Moon through counsel Ashwin Ingole contending that though RSS is an unregistered organization, still the civic body is extending undue favours to them at taxpayers’ expense.

In a series of reports, TOI exposed that though rules make an exception for notified tourist sites or pilgrim places like Deekshabhoomi, RSS headquarters is neither of these.

The HC also asked NMC to file an affidavit on whether the Smarak Samiti is a public or private place.
