NAGPUR: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) struck at Nagpur municipal corporation (NMC) and police department in back-to-back action on Wednesday, nabbing one from each agency red-handed while accepting bribe.
Class IV employee Mukesh Meshram was arrested by an ACB team under police inspector Bharat Khirsagar at the office of tax inspector of Ashi Nagar zone at Teka Naka.
He had accepted Rs 2,580 from complainant Anil Sahu. It's learnt that Rs 580 was the actual tax amount while Rs 2,000 had been accepted as bribe.
Meshram had lured Sahu, a driver, into giving a bribe by offering to ensure that apart from settling the tax even the receipt would be issued in his name. In fact, the title of the property for which Sahu was paying tax is still in the name of the earlier owner.
Meshram was asking for the bribe for mutation. Sources said that Meshram, inducted as class IV employee, was accommodated in the office of the tax inspector as he was able to handle the responsibility. Sources in ACB said Meshram's links to tax inspector Rameshwar Nandanvar are under the scanner now.
An offence was registered against Meshram at Pachpaoli police station under relevant section of Prevention of Corruption Act.
In a separate incident, ACB sleuths caught red-handed police head constable Mangesh Giri and his accomplice, identified as Namdeo Dhakate, for accepting Rs 500 bribe. Giri and his aide Dhakate, who owns a cycle store, have been nabbed by an ACB team under Raju Bahadure.
It's learnt that Giri, attached to
Yashodhara Nagar police station since 2008, had been harassing complainant Gangaram Dekate from Binaki Mangalwari. Dekate, a scrap dealer, was being harassed by Giri to make a payment of Rs 500 to avoid being penalized for keeping scrap newsprint in a public place. Giri in-charge of the patrolling vehicle had approached Dekate on May 11.
The head constable had asked Dekate to pay up or face action within a couple of days. After the deal was finalized, Giri is learnt to have asked Dekate to make the payment through Dhakate. The ACB sleuths followed Dhakate after he had received the payment from Dekate, and then arrested him while he was handing over the money to Giri.
Offences against Giri and Dhakate have been registered at Yashodhara Nagar police station.
