NAGPUR: Revenge due to old rivalries has resulted in the city registering a
murder every 48 hours. 22 murder cases in the last 52 days have given sleepless nights to the city police. Records with the police department show that 47 murders have been reported till date since January. Interestingly, the numbers are the same as last year for the same period.
City police chief KK Pathak, who took charge of Nagpur city on December 1, has introduced many new measures to control the crime rate like patrolling, asking DCPs of every zone to have a round at the police station and patrolling.
However, despite Pathak's new techniques and plans, murders continue unabated.
Joint CP Sanjay Saxena informed TOI that the police have been analysing the reasons behind the recent major murder cases and are chalking out plans. "Very few murders are planned, most happen on the spur of the moment. We are working on the planned murders by keeping a track on the past criminals and murder accused while efforts are also being made to tackle the unplanned murders in whatever possible way," he said.
It's learnt that the majority of the 47 murder cases is over old rivalry. Records also show that in 80% cases, the deceased are stoned to death - a stone is becoming an instant weapon to commit murders.
The recent brutal murder of Suraj Jaiswal in public view by six armed assailants near the busy Ganeshpeth bus stand area has raised a question over the police presence in sensitive areas. Jaiswal was also stoned to death.
Two police constables were suspended over the Jaiswal murder case for their negligence. "But were only the two constables responsible for the gruesome murder," questioned a social worker.
While the city police have been successful in solving maximum murder cases that have happened in the last five months, the Kalamna police have failed to crack down two recent murder cases, both relating to two elderly men found dead in their residences.
DCP (Zone IV) Chandra Kishore Mina, who has burnt midnight oil solving three back-to-back murder cases in the last two days, says, "It's not a problem restricted to a particular zone. It's the problem of the city where past criminals are now not restricting their activities to only one area. The accused in the recent double murder case include some criminals of Lakadganj and some from Nandanvan."
Though Nandanvan police have arrested five accused in the double murder case of Rashid Khan and
Abdul Qadir, four accused are still absconding. The murder of Sumit Tiwari at a beer bar in Kotwali too has remained unsolved.
