YAVATMAL: Over the last six months, 247 HIV patients were detected in the district out of 53,520 blood samples tested at the three anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centres. The district has so far reported 6,159 HIV patients. The HIV patients, including seven minors, are being treated and improving.

Though it is considered a stigma by society, health education is the only solution to prevent the spread of AIDS, said District AIDS Control Officer Dr Preeti Das. The belief that AIDS spreads due to touch or shaking hands or dining together is wrong and it should be wiped out through proper education, Dr Das said. She added that health workers are being deployed for the proper rehabilitation of the affected and they are trained to create mass awareness among the people, especially the youths.

However, there are complaints of medicines often being in short supply.
