250 donate hair for cancer patients in Nagpur

NAGPUR: As part of their campaign to enhance cancer patients’ confidence and self-esteem, HCG NCHRI Cancer Centre started a unique hair donation drive called ‘Strands of Hope’ on World Cancer Day.

People, especially women are requested to donate their hair. In partnership with Capello salon and Wig Design International, donated hair will be used to make wigs for cancer patients in need. These wigs will be provided to needy patients free of cost.

“Around 250 people came forward to donate hair. We call them cancer advocates and appreciate their support for the movement,” said Venkateshwarlu Marapaka Chief Operating Officer (COO), HCG NCHRI Cancer Centre in Nagpur.

Students of Central India College of Pharmacy, Kamla Nehru College, Gurunanak College of Pharmacy, Raisoni College, GS college of commerce, and MSS college participated in the hair donation drive. They got new haircuts for free on behalf of Capello, certificates, and special gifts.

“Cancer, as a disease, is a difficult battle that requires tremendous mental fortitude to overcome. The drive recognized the generosity of so many hair donors,” said Dr Ajay Mehta of HCG Nagpur. According to him, these donors have donated their strands of love, joy, and best wishes to cancer patients and it will make society a better place to live for them.

“It was a wonderful experience for me. I have been growing hair for the last 10 years and my look completely changed after a haircut,” said one of the donors.

HCG has started this project nationwide and Nagpur was one of the ten centers where the drive was held. As per the rules, the minimum length of hair must be 8 to 14 inches. Curly hair can be pulled straight to measure the minimum required size. They accept grey hair but chemically treated, coloured, hair is not accepted. Hair must be washed and dried before donation. Not just women, but several men falling in these criteria also donated hair.
