Nagpur: An 18-year-old youth, student of commerce stream of first year, drowned on Sunday after slipping into a deep, unguarded ancient stepwell (Bawdi) in Velahari while filming reels and take photographs at the site.The deceased has been identified as Aniket Sontakke, a resident of Hudkeshwar Road, was a student of a Sakkardara-based college. Aniket had gone to Velahari along with four friends specifically to create content for social media reels.According to details shared by police, the group had visited the historic stepwell (Bawdi) located just 200-300 meters from Aniket's family's under-construction new house in the area.While posing near the edge of the deep Aniket's slippers accidentally fell into the water. One of his friends' slippers too had fallen into the water. While Aniket decided to retrieve it, his friend refrained from taking the risk.In a hasty bid to retrieve them, Aniket lost balance and plunged into the stepwell and drowned. Aniket's friends had immediately raised an alarm. Local residents had rushed to the spot and the fire brigade was called for rescue operations.The body was recovered from the deep well and sent to AIIMS Nagpur for post-mortem. Hingna police station registered a case of accidental death and ruled out any foul play.
