12-yr-old Vaishnavi stuns seeds, scores hat-trick of district titles
Nagpur: Vaishnavi Manglekar became the toast of the tournament on Tuesday. The 12-year-old won as many as three singles finals and became the only shuttler to score a hat-trick of titles at the Baidyanath Yonex Sunrise Nagpur District badminton championship, which concluded at the Subhedar Hall, Ravi Nagar, on Tuesday.The Badminton Stars Academy shuttler underlined her supremacy by winning the U-17, U-15 and U-13 girls singles titles by stunning a couple of seeded players.While Vaishnavi hogged the limelight on the concluding day of the district tournament, 16-year-old Rutva Sajwan surprised top seed Gaurav Rege to emerge as the new men’s singles champion. Both Rutva and Gaurav won their doubles finals and ended up winning twin titles. 12-year-old Aditya Yaul and Sparsh Kawale too pocketed twin tiles by winning the U-13, U-15 and U-17, U-19 boys singles finals respectively.In the veterans category, Rajendra Yadav, Piyush Makhe and Jayendra Dhole won a couple of finals for double delight.On her way to becoming the showstopper of the five-day tournament, 12-year-old Vaishnavi lived up to her billing with straight games 21-18, 21-14 triumph over Sanvi Ghate in the U-13 girls singles final.Vaishnavi, who practices at the Mankapur Stadium under Amit Raut, stunned U-15 and U-17 top seeds Fizza Akbani and Ditisha Somkuwar to underline her supremacy by winning all three finals she played. In the U-15 summit clash, Vaishnavi posted a hard-fought 21-14, 21-19 victory over Fizza. In the U-17 title clash, Vaishnavi stunned U-19 girls singles champion Ditisha Somkuwar in straight games 21-19, 21-9 to score a hat-trick of titles.
