1.45L Vehicles Added On City Roads in 10 Months
Nagpur: Nagpur's total vehicular population has climbed to a staggering 31.26 lakh, with nearly 7.53 lakh new vehicles registered over the last 6 years, highlighting the rapid pace of motorisation across the district. The continuous surge in registrations added immense pressure on the city's road infrastructure and is increasingly being linked to growing traffic congestion. Figures from the district's 3 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) — East (MH-49), City (MH-31) and Rural (MH-40) — indicate a consistent upward trend in vehicle registrations over the years.
In the first 10 months of the 2025-26 financial year alone, about 1.45 lakh new vehicles were added to Nagpur's roads. Among these, East RTO recorded 59,060 registrations, Rural RTO 58,230 and City RTO 28,149, pointing to strong growth not just within the city but also in surrounding areas. On an average, over 353 vehicles were registered every day during the last 6 years, reflecting the rising dependence on private vehicles. The year-wise data also shows a steady increase at East RTO, where registrations rose from 38,272 in 2020-21 to 42,140 in 2021-22, 54,127 in 2022-23 and 58,900 in 2023-24, before climbing to 62,758 in 2024-25. The current financial year already saw 59,060 vehicles registered in just 10 months. At City RTO, the numbers increased from 16,790 in 2020-21 to 19,287 in 2021-22, 24,352 in 2022-23, 26,722 in 2023-24 and 28,597 in 2024-25. So far in 2025-26, the office registered 28,149 vehicles in 10 months. The Rural RTO too recorded steady growth, with registrations rising from 39,224 in 2020-21 to 41,083 in 2021-22, 46,867 in 2022-23, 52,109 in 2023-24 and 56,977 in 2024-25. In the ongoing financial year, the figure already reached 58,230 in 10 months. Interestingly, in the 2 city-based RTOs — East and City — nearly 17.66 lakh two-wheelers are currently registered, compared to around 2.50 lakh cars, underlining the dominance of two-wheelers on city roads. In the first 10 months of 2025-26 alone, around 61,903 two-wheelers and 15,988 cars were registered, further contributing to the growing traffic load.
