MYSORE: A woman succumbed to the
H1N1 virus in Mysore on Friday. The district health authorities have confirmed that the death was due to
swine flu.
Savithramma (51) died from bronchial pneumonia at Basappa Memorial hospital around 10 am. A resident of Hunsur town, Savithramma was admitted to the hospital in the third week of July. She was suffering from fever and cough.
Earlier she was treated at a hospital in Hunsur for four days before she was shifted to Mysore.
District surveillance officer Dr Nagaraj told TOI that she came to the private hospital on July 22 with severe cold, cough and fever. As she had flu-like symptoms, swab samples were taken from her and sent to Bangalore for confirmation. She was put under treatment. A week later, lab reports confirmed the virus and she was quarantined at the hospital.
Meanwhile, a medical team was sent to her native place and a survey was conducted in the vicinity of her residence. Even their relatives were treated as a precautionary measure. The surveillance officer said Savithramma's health deteriorated leading to her death on Wednesday. She died of pneumonia, he confirmed.
DHO Nagaraj Rao said this is third death due to H1N1 influenza since January this year in the district. So far, 12 people have tested positive for the virus here. All of them have been quarantined and are under observation, and recovering, he said.
Rao disclosed that two persons each from Mandya and Chamarajanagar have succumbed to H1N1 influenza till date.
