Do you love Carnatic classical music, but find the regular hours-long concerts droning? Like to be treated to a spiced-up version of the musical form? Then here's a chance for you to enjoy Thani Avarthanam, a variety of the Carnatic classical music.
A bunch of city-based youngsters are set to present a concert at Sri Prasanna Sitarama Mandira on Sunday, featuring the sounds of the Indian bamboo flute, violin, mrindangam, kanjira and ghatam.
Thani Avarthanam is the extended solo that is played by the percussionists. The percussionist displays a full range of his skills and rhythmic imagination during the solo, which may take two to 20 minutes.
Elaborating on the concert, flutist Mysore A Chandan Kumar, the great grandson of Piteel Chowdaiah, said, "Thani Avarthanam is a form of concert formed to break monotony of the regular concerts. While in a regular three-hour concert the main singer/performer will perform for two hours forty-five minutes and the percussionists will be provided a chance to perform only for some 15 minutes, Thani Avarthanam will provide them extra time, to make the concert seem more musical and appealing."
The artistes performing in the concert are Sai Shiv Lakshmi Keshav (mridangam), Karthik (kanjira), Tumkur B Shashishankar (ghatam), Mysore A Chandan Kumar (flute) and H M Smitha (violin). Such concerts have been presented in Mysore before too but not too often. For, they need more rehearsals. "We are a bunch of freelancers who get together to present such unique concerts whenever we get a chance to do so." Organizing this concert was the initiative of Sai Shiv, who specially intends to promote the Indian percussion, Chandan added. The event will be held at the temple premises on Sunday at 6 pm.
