Tributes paid to cricketer Akshay
Shivamogga: BJP MLC and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Shivamogga Zonal Convener DS Arun on Sunday recalled his long association with Karnataka Ranji Trophy cricketer SL Akshay, who passed away on Sunday after suffering a sudden heart attack mid-game during a KSCA league match in Bengaluru.
Expressing deep grief over the tragedy, the legislator said, “I have known Akshay from his early days and vividly recall his debut Ranji Trophy match at the JNNCE Ground here in Shivamogga. Just last week, I spoke with him. He recently secured a job at a bank but expressed how deeply he missed devoting more time to cricket. He was highly spirited and shared his plans to get involved with the upcoming Maharaja Trophy. Akshay had a massive passion for coaching and guiding youngsters, besides actively playing in the third division.”
His family members are currently on their way from Shivamogga to Bengaluru, and a final decision regarding the movement of his body will be taken jointly with his wife and family. There is a strong possibility that his mortal remains will reach Shivamogga by Monday, Arun told TOI.
In an official statement, the KSCA Shivamogga Zonal Committee paid rich tributes to the departed cricketer, stating that he earned great respect through his hard work, dedication and outstanding all-round performances. The committee remembered him as a humble, friendly personality who always encouraged young cricketers, noting that his contributions as both a player and a coach will never be forgotten.
Akshay's father was originally from Santebennur of Channagiri taluk in neighbouring Davanagere district and grew up in Shivamogga city. He was the son of the late Lokesh, a well-regarded police officer who served across various police stations and the SP office in Shivamogga.
Akshay’s brother is also practising cricket. Akshay recently settled in Bengaluru with his wife. Upon hearing the shocking news, his relatives rushed from Shivamogga to Bengaluru to support the grieving family. The news of his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the sports community. Those close to Akshay described him as a highly disciplined individual with an impeccable lifestyle.
Adding to the heartbreak, Akshay celebrated both his wedding anniversary and his 38th birthday just weeks earlier, on April 30.
“His unexpected death just 25 days after his birthday has left his family, friends and the cricketing fraternity in deep mourning,” said NR Nagaraj, president of the Durgigudi Cricket Association, who mentored Akshay during his foundational training years.
Over the years, Akshay progressed from local league cricket to representing Karnataka in the prestigious Ranji Trophy and playing for several Karnataka Premier League (KPL) franchises. Beyond his playing career, he was a certified coach who served as a bowling coach.
