MYSURU: Incessant and heavy rains witnessed in various parts of the district from the beginning of monsoon and the fast filling up of reservoirs has created flood situations in many areas. To identify flood-prone areas, the district administration conducted a survey and identified vulnerable villages.
Last year, due to continuous downpour and the release of nearly a lakh cusecs of water from Kabini and Nugu reservoirs led to flooding in
Nanjangud
. As the situation worsened, he NDRF teams were summoned to rescue people and livestock.
As the district, especially in
HD Kote and Sargur
taluks, is witnessing incessant rainfall, the district administration conducted a survey recently to identify the flood prone villages in all the eight taluks. The authorities found 19 villages which are facing high risk of getting flooded during heavy rainfall and release of water from dams.
According to the survey, nine villages in DB Kuppe gram panchayat and eight villages in Bidarahalli GP in HD Kote taluk has been identified under ‘very high risk’ flood hazard category while five villages in
Periyapatna
taluk, two villages in T
Narasipura
taluk and seven villages in Sargur taluk has been identified under ‘high risk’ category.
More than 7,300 people are estimated to be vulnerable to floods in ‘very high risk’ zone in HD Kote taluk while 953 people in Periyapatna, 3,511 in T Narasipura and 5,224 people
Sarguru
taluk live in ‘high risk’ areas.
Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority
(KSDMA) had declared HD Kote, Hunsur, Nanjangud, Periyapatna and T Narasipura taluks as flood affected taluks in 2018, 2019 and 2020

told TOI that the district administration has made all preparations to handle any situation.
“Already flood relief centres which include anganwadi centres, schools and hotels have been identified. Due to the Covid situation, this time more relief centres have been selected to follow social distancing rules. Doctors and medical staff from primary health centres and ASHA workers are ready to attend to rescue and rehabilitation operations,” he said.
