MYSURU: Mysureans who had bagged top honours in the recently announced Karnataka state film awards were felicitated here on Sunday.
Those felicitated at the event hosted by Karnataka Kavalu Pade at Press Club are Poornachandra Tejaswi and Naveen Sajju for winning Best Music Director and Best Playback Singer awards in the movie 'Lucia', and Bhagirathi Bai Kadam for her role in the yet-to-be-released movie 'Agasi Parlour'.
Felicitating the trio, writer D Jaware Gowda said: "Music is one of the best performing arts having healing powers. Rashtra Kavi Kuvempu also penned two poems on music". The writer also recited those poems.
Appreciating the music university for offering a new certificate course in Yakshagana, he urged the university to give prominence to Gamaka too.
Speaking on the occasion, music university vice-chancellor Sarvamangala Shanker rued poor-quality lyrics in some Kannada film songs. She urged the awardees not to work for songs whose lyrics are in bad taste.
Hunusur-born theatre artiste Bhagirathi Bai Kadam, who has made her mark in Assam theatre, expressed joy at being felicitated in her hometown. "Unlike TV and the big screen, theatre presents artistes in their true form. Theatre is my dharma," said Bhagirathi.
Tejaswi said that films have the potential to popularize state language. "To understand Tamil movies, many in Karnataka have learnt Tamil. We need to think on how we can utilize movies for this purpose. Many people outside the state came to know about Kannada after watching 'Lucia'," he claimed.
Sajju, who is pursuing a music course in Gangubai Hanagal Music University, enthralled the audience with a song.
