Second year student stabs senior in Shivamogga college; accused on the run
SHIVAMOGGA: The calm in the
Kote police, who have initiated a probe into the incident, said second and third year BSc students had had an altercation on Tuesday, warning one respective groups to stay within their limits. “The college’s physical director Lakshmanappa had warned them against misbehaving on campus lest they invite stringent action. No problems were reported on Wednesday since cops were present on the campus. However, the situation got out of hand on Thursday, when the verbal spat soon escalated and Gokul Raj, a second-year BSc student stabbed final year student Avinash. College authorities rushed Avinash to the hospital, and he is recovering,” police said.
Cops added that a case had been booked against Raj, and his friend Amith Singh.
Not a ragging case: Principal
On the other hand, the college management sought to quash any rumours of the incident having been triggered by ragging. College principal Shashirekha told TOI, “There is no place for ragging on the campus. The incident was a result of personal rivalry.”
Meanwhile, other students said that final year BSc students had allegedly warned Raj against harassing girls on campus. “When he did not stop, Avinash, along with his friends, questioned him on Thursday. Raj had a knife hidden, and when they were talking, stabbed Avinash,” a student said.
“We are investigating the case from all possible angles,” said cops.
Meanwhile, Raj, along with his friends, has fled, and a search operation has been launched. “We are confident of arresting him in a day,” police said.
