MYSURU: The Mysore District Athletics Association on Tuesday presented its annual Nandi and best athletes award for 2014-15.
Speaking after distributing the awards, mayor R Lingappa said, “Sports and education are like two eyes; both are important and one should not neglect either of them. Many parents lay stress only on their children’s studies which is not a good sign.
Parents should encourage children in both studies and sports.”
MLA Vasu said that the fund allocated for sports is not sufficient and efforts should be made to get more funds. He contributed Rs 51,000 to the association.
Lingappa presented the Nandi award to professor Seshanna, former principal, department of studies in physical education and sports sciences, and photojournalist M A Sriram.
Outstanding athletes for 2014-15 were also awarded on the occasion.
In the girl’s section, Sinchana Ganesh (long jump, u-14), V Ambika (shotput, u-16), HR Navami (400m, u-18), PS Uma (shotput, u-20) and Reena George (200m, 400m) received the award. In the men’s section, Tabrez (long jump, u-14) and C Druva (javelin throw, u-16) received the honours.
The athletes were presented with trophies and Rs 3,000 in cash.
The association also felicitated C Krishna, director, department of physical education, University of Mysore, who retire in June.
Former international athlete and association president S Somashekar, Mahesh Ballal and Abhilash Nair, vice-presidents of the association, and B Srikanth, secretary of the association, were also present.
