The construction of the subway connecting the Zoo and the parking centre was taken up to prevent traffic jam and movement of tourists on Shalivahana Road. The work was taken up in January at a cost of around Rs 1.9 crore by the Mysuru Zoo and is expected to be completed by October-end.
The subway work has been taken up by Bengaluru-based construction company, Vinyas Builders. The subway will be 24-metre long, 10-ft tall and 4.9 meters wide.
The project was expected to be completed within six months but was delayed due to the pandemic and incessant rain.
Mysuru Zoo executive director Ajit Kulkarni told TOI, “vehicles have been allowed to ply on the stretch. Only after the rain recedes, the concrete can be laid. It will take another month to complete the work. It should be completed by the end of October.”
After the civil work of the subway is completed, they will take up painting of the tunnel in the second phase. The theme will be paintings of animals and messages on wildlife conservation.
