Mysuru mishap: 11 students injured as school van overturns after axle comes off; admitted to hospital
MYSURU: At least eleven students from a private school were injured and hospitalised after the van transporting them overturned on Wednesday afternoon, reportedly after its axle came off.
The accident took place in Habbanakuppe village in Hunsur taluk, around 60km from Mysuru city. The van toppled into a roadside canal, officials said.
All eleven injured students were taken to the government-run Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysuru. According to doctors, five of them were subjected to CT scans after they complained of vomiting post-accident. The driver and one student sustained minor injuries, while the rest were reported to be out of danger.
The van driver has suffered injury in his forehead while a girl student received three stitches for an injury.
Cheluvamba hospital RMO Dr MD Shivaramkrishna told TOI that all eleven students, including five girls, are out of danger but under observation. They were brought to hospital around 11 am following the accident. Except for five students, the rest would be discharged. One student has suffered an injury to his tooth.
Hunsur rural police said the incident happened when MR Noble English Medium school, Kampalapura, Periyapatna taluk, Mysuru, van carrying 12 students toppled while negotiating a curve near Habbanakuppe village in Hunsur taluk. The van’s axle came off after hitting the canal’s culvert around 8.30 am. Immediately villagers rushed to their rescue and shifted them to hospital.
The incident happened some 7 kms away from the private school after picking up the last student from the Habbanakuppe village. Children injured were students of class 1 and 2, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police C Mallik told TOI that the van was carrying 12 students when the incident happened. The students are aged between 6 and 12 years and the driver Srinivas, aged 31 years, too has sustained injury.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hunsur subdivision, Gopalkrishna said all injured students have been admitted in Cheluvamba hospital in Mysuru city.
