MLA Ramadas directs officials to revive Lingambudi Lake
MYSURU: Developed by
Accompanied by officials from Mysuru Urban Development Authority (Muda) and Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), Ramadas visited the lake in Srirampura on Monday. He took stock of the encroachments along the lake’s boundaries by private layouts, inflow of sewage water and the damage sustained by the sluice gate of the lake, which resulted in floods when heavy showers lashed the city last year.
Pointing to the lake’s rich heritage, Ramadas said that it was over 400 years’ old, and was built by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar to store water that flowed from a distance of 15 to 20km from the city. “Last year, the sluice gate was damaged by miscreants, and during the monsoon, the lake flooded into the residential areas,” Ramadas said.
Lamenting the shrinking in the lake’s area, Ramadas said, “Over the years, encroachment by private layouts has resulted in the lake, which was once spread over 280 acres, shrinking. Some of these encroachers have even erected fences around the lake, and blocked its feeder canals. The underground drainage pipes from Kanakadasa Layout have been illegally connected to the stormwater drain linked to the lake, resulting in sewage flowing to it.”
The MLA said that he had directed officials of MCC and Muda to disconnect the UGD lines from the SWD to prevent the water in the lake from being contaminated. “I have also instructed officials to clear encroachments along the lake, and to repair the damaged sluice gates,” Ramadas added.
Assuring the people of finding a permanent solution to the lake’s problems, he said, “The lake will regain its glory, and attract migratory birds and morning walkers.”
