MCC to set up two MRF plants to process city’s dry waste

Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to set up material recovery facility (MRF) plants at the Vidyaranyapuram and Rayanakere waste treatment plants to process dry waste generated in the city.Mysuru generates about 535 tonnes of dry and wet waste daily, of which 200 tonnes is dry waste. The MRF plants will process dry waste, mainly plastics, by separating and preparing single-stream recyclable material, aiding reduction, recycling and reuse.The facilities will also enable recycling of glass, bottles, cardboard, metal containers, aluminium, steel cans and cartons.While MCC is converting daily-collected wet waste into compost and other products, it has been struggling to handle dry waste from all 65 wards, despite successful source segregation, due to the lack of a dedicated processing facility.MCC nodal officer for Swachh Survekshan KR Mrutyunjaya said the proposed MRF plants at Vidyaranyapuram and Rayanakere are aimed at strengthening dry waste processing and improving recycling outcomes.Speaking to TOI, MCC commissioner Sheikh Asif Tanveer said the corporation has released Rs 21 crore in grants for the two plants.
