Mandya police conduct civilian gun training programme
Mandya: In a bold move toward community empowerment, the Mandya district police conducted a transformative week-long civilian gun training programme aimed at bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public. The echoes of precision shots in the Dodda Byadarahalli forest marked the culmination of an intensive course where 80 people, including a significant and inspired group of women and senior citizens, transitioned from novices to responsible and confident firearm handlers.Guided by well-experienced instructors, participants were trained in the technical aspects of firearm handling, including maintenance, cleaning, and the essential ethics of responsible ownership. Deputy superintendent of police S Rachaiah said the overwhelming response—nearly 100 applications—was met with a rigorous background verification process to ensure the highest standards of safety. For the trainees, the certificate earned is more than just a recognition of skill; it is also an important step toward fulfilling one of the 13 mandatory requirements for obtaining a gun licence. The motivations behind the training were as diverse as the participants themselves. Businessman Shiva Kumar MN viewed the training as a practical step to safeguard agricultural lands from wild animals. "Our farm is located near a forest area where wild animals, including leopards, occasionally appear. When I heard about this training through a friend, I decided to enrol as a precautionary measure," he said.Others saw the training as an opportunity to develop skills that could open doors to employment in the private security sector. The camp also witnessed inspiring participation from families and senior citizens. Ramesh attended the training along with his daughter Gagana R, an IT professional eager to learn firearm safety and responsibility. Among the women participants was a 55-year-old trainee who joined the programme to facilitate the transfer of her father's gun licence, while a 65-year-old man took part to renew his licence, highlighting the diverse age groups and backgrounds represented in the training.Beyond the tactical drills, the programme strengthened trust and mutual respect between the police and the citizens they serve.
