Mandya: Workers of the
Congress party on Monday took out a rally from
Visvesvaraya Statue
to the
Mandya
deputy commissioner’s office on Monday to protest rural development and panchayat raj minister
KS Eshwarappa
’s remarks on the possibility of the saffron flag being raised at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Members of the Mandya District Congress Committee raised slogans against
Eshwarappa
, and chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, questioning the latter’s failure to initiate action against his cabinet colleague.
The protesters accused the BJP leaders of shielding their party colleague Eshwarappa, whose remarks about the ‘Bhagwa Dhwaja’ being raised at the Red Fort were tantamount to sedition.
President of Mandya district Congress CD Gangadhar said that Eshwarappa’s continuity in the state cabinet, after making such remarks, was incredibly.
“The kind of statements he made against the National Flag cannot be tolerated. And yet, he continues to hold a Constitutional post,” Gangadhar said.
Seeing the governor’s intervention, the protesters urged Thawar Chand Gehlot to preserve the sanctity of the state cabinet by dismissing Eshwarappa. The protesters warned of the Congress intensifying its stir across Mandya if Eshwarappa was not removed, while the party’s legislators would continue their dharna at Vidhana Soudha.
