MADIKERI: Galibeedu gram panchayat near Madikeri has developed an old lake into an attractive tourist spot using various available funds.

Chappanda Kere at Galibeedu and will soon be opened to tourists. One of the oldest lakes in the area, it was neglected by villagers and the authorities leading to degradation. It became a centre for illegal activities.

PDO Shashikirana said the lake is being developed using funds available under MGNREGA. The taluk panchayat and the zilla panchayat too have extended funds. While Rs 20 lakh from MGNREGA was used to remove silt from the lake, Rs 10 lakh was extended by the taluk panchayat to build a view-point at the edge of the lake. The ZP extended Rs 10 lakh to construct bunds.

Pathways have been built using interlocking tiles. A concrete drain has been built to ensure rainwater is drained out. The authorities are also creating a parking space.

The gram panchayat authorities are also developing three acre land around the lake to attract tourists. The project is expected to be completed in three months, she said.
