Water plant near Bhadra dam sparks concerns among farmers

Shivamogga: Construction of a water purification plant under the Jal Jeevan Mission near the Bhadra dam in Lakkavalli has sparked concerns among local farmers, who fear it may endanger the dam's safety.KT Gangadhar, a farmer leader, warned that the plant's location within the dam's buffer zone violates norms and poses a significant threat. Gangadhar sought deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar's immediate attention to address the issue.The Rs 500-crore initiative intends to supply one Tmc feet of water to communities in Chikkamagaluru and Chitradurga districts. Those from the farming community who visited the site raised alarm about the safety of the dam, which is essential for irrigating vast agricultural areas in central Karnataka.Speaking to TOI, Gangadhar alleged that politicians and officers are involved in bribery practices in connection with the project. He demanded a detailed project report, emphasising that regardless of the circumstances, they will vigorously oppose the construction.According to Bhadra reservoir officials, the project received approval in 2020, with land allocation handled by the Chikkamagaluru DC under supervision of fishery department. Officials are currently assessing the potential effects on the dam structure.The dam, situated at Lakkavalli between Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts, serves as a critical resource for numerous families in central Karnataka. It irrigates 162,818 hectares, produces electricity, and provides drinking water to surrounding communities, establishing itself as an essential infrastructure for the region's water and power needs.
