Families moved out to safe spots
MYSURU/ MANDYA: The situation is grim in
Three dozen families were shifted to safer places, and arrangements were made for their stay in school buildings, while some moved in with their relatives.
A ganji kendra (relief camp) was opened at D B Kuppe village in H D Kote on Friday, where 75 residents were given food. Tahsildar Manjunath R said the camp was opened late on Thursday.
In Mandya district, there is no respite for people in lowlying areas, with the Cauvery in spate. According to officers of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited (CNNL), the Krishnarajasagara (KRS) reservoir is receiving more than 1lakh cusecs of water while more than 1.17 lakh cusecs are being let into the river. The water level in the reservoir was brought down to 119.95ft from 122ft for safety reasons. The maximum level of the reservoir is 124.80ft.
Though there has been no human casualty so far, crops submerged on both sides of the swelling river in scores of villages, were completely destroyed. Farmers in Hangarahalli, Doddapalya, Mahadevapura, Gendehosahalli and surrounding villages are the worst-affected due to the flooding Cauvery.
Local MLA Ravindra Srikantaiah asked officers to compensate the affected farmers for crop loss.
