Drowning risks: Tourist entry banned at Balamuri, Edamuri

Mandya: What is usually a bustling summer hotspot has now turned silent, as authorities have imposed a strict ban on tourist entry to Balamuri and Edamuri — popular Cauvery river destinations in Srirangapatna taluk. The decision comes in the wake of repeated drowning incidents in Cauvery River, raising serious concerns over public safety.Traditionally, summer vacation draws hundreds of visitors daily to these scenic spots, known for their shallow river stretches and picturesque surroundings. However, beneath the calm surface lies a dangerous reality — strong undercurrents and sudden whirlpools that have claimed numerous lives over the years.According to official records, 79 people have died at these locations since 2015, with four fatalities being reported in the last fortnight alone. Taking note of the alarming trend, the district authorities have prohibited tourist movement there until further notice. Barricades have been installed, and local officials, along with police personnel, have been deployed to ensure strict compliance with the order.Srirangapatna tahsildar Chethana said the decision was unavoidable given the surge in visitors during the summer season. "On an average, 300-400 people visit Balamuri and Edamuri every day during this period. Unfortunately, many tourists are unaware of the river's unpredictable nature. Even those who know how to swim have fallen victim to the hidden whirlpools," she said, emphasising that local residents are generally aware of the risks and exercise caution, while tourists often underestimate the dangers. Authorities have reiterated that the ban is a preventive measure aimed solely at safeguarding human life.Meanwhile, officials have urged the public to cooperate with the restrictions and avoid venturing into prohibited zones. Discussions are also under way to explore long-term safety measures, including enhanced warning systems and monitoring, before reopening the sites to visitors.
