Debate intensifies over proposed flyover at Hosahundi black spot

Mysuru: Debate has intensified over a proposed flyover near the accident-prone Outer Ring Road–Devalapura Road junction at Hosahundi, identified as a black spot. The planned project is about a kilometre from the risky stretch between the Nanjangud Road and Uthanahalli Road junctions.Officials from various departments, including chief engineer Sridar of the NHAI, took part in a public hearing organised to discuss the proposal on Wednesday. The gathering saw divided opinions among residents, with both, opposition and support voiced for the flyover. Authorities invited attendees to place their written suggestions in a drop box provided by the forest department.Sridar emphasised the urgent need for safety interventions at this designated black spot. Over the past three years, the location has witnessed 12 accidents, resulting in five fatalities. Despite the road being 30 metres wide, high traffic volumes make round-the-clock policing or signalling impractical, leading to congestion and increased accident risk. To address the issue permanently, Central govt has approved the flyover, which will allow continuous overhead traffic flow while facilitating smooth local movement below, reducing vehicle idling and congestion.He clarified that the project prioritises public safety over private or commercial interests, highlighting its critical role in saving lives.However, some residents and stakeholders raised concerns. Krishna N and Nanjunswamy of Hosahundi said that current traffic levels are manageable with signals during peak hours, and a flyover may not be necessary for another ten years. M Jayaram said that we need not construct a flyover, which may cause a lot of damage to the environment.
