Mandya: For the second time in a week, the Krishnaraja Sagar (
KRS) Dam, and the adjoining Brindavan Gardens in Mandya district, were closed to the public on Saturday, a day after a leopard was spotted prowling on the premises. The closure of the popular tourist attraction in Mandya has left both visitors and the authorities at the reservoir equally disappointed, more so, given that it is a weekend.
On average, nearly 10,000 people pass through the turnstiles of the dam on Saturday and Sunday.
The big cat was caught prowling around the premises of the Brindavan Gardens on the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera on Friday, and the authorities, once alerted, wasted no time in asking the visitors to leave the premises. The leopard was first sighted on the premises of
KRS Dam on October 22, prompting the authorities at the reservoir to bar visitors for a few days. The dam was subsequently opened after a through search of the premises revealed that the leopard had left the Brindavan Gardens. However, the big cat’s reappearance at the gardens has raised the hackles of the authorities.
Consequently, a team of officers is now camping in the gardens, monitoring the movement of the leopard, while simultaneously working on rescuing it. Officials of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd (CNNL), which is responsible for the management of KRS Dam, said that the reservoir would remain closed to the public until further notice.
