The retired English professor, who is contesting the polls to the legislative council from South Graduates' constituency as an independent candidate, said that he is in the fray to fight corruption and to promote secularism. Admitting that there are differences among writers about extending support to him, Bhagavan, said: "Some of those who are opposing me are not writers. I have the support of litterateurs including Chandrashekar Kambar." He said that he would not have contested had he known that Kannada activist and former MLA Vatal Nagaraj was also in the race. "But by the time he announced that he will contest, I had filed my nomination papers," he stated.

Some writers and activists are campaigning for Vatal Nagaraj.
