Basavanna principles will remain relevant as long as caste system exists: CM
Mysuru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah stated that Basavanna's principles will remain relevant as long as the stagnant caste system exists. After inaugurating Basava Jayanti celebrations organised by Federation of Basava Organisations at Kalamandira and presenting ‘Basavashree Award-2026', Siddaramaiah congratulated Siddharama Sharana for being awarded the Basava Puraskar National Award-2025-26 for following Basavanna's ideals. The CM said Basavanna fought against caste and varna systems in society, raised his voice against superstitions, and rejected the doctrine of karma. "For thousands of years, oppressed classes were deprived of literacy. Basava and his followers heralded the Lingayat religion as an alternative to the Vedic religion, which had a rigid caste system. Therefore, in the 12th century, the Lingayat religion, based on equality and humanity, was established," he said, adding: "In a society of contradictions, Buddha, Basava and his followers strived for change. Yet, the caste system persists today. The Indian caste system is stagnant. Change in the stagnant caste system is possible only when economic, social and educational power is attained."He emphasised that economic, social and educational freedom is necessary for change in an unequal society. He said those unaware of the history of injustices against the weak in society cannot create history.Efforts are being made by vested interests to perpetuate inequality in society. Ideological and scientific education is necessary to eradicate the caste system. Therefore, the youth should not fall prey to superstitions. Manuvadis promote superstitions, Siddaramaiah stated.A grant of Rs 5 crore for Basava Bhavan was promised on the occasion.Social welfare minister H C Mahadevappa described the celebrations as a step towards reconnecting people with the revolutionary ideals of Kalyana movement. He noted Basavanna's early stand against gender discrimination and his emphasis on ethical governance and responsible use of public funds. He also highlighted the Anubhava Mantapa as a pioneering platform for dialogue and spirituality.Kannada and culture minister Shivaraj Tangadagi hailed Basavanna as a champion of equality and democratic values and spoke about efforts to recognise him as the state's Cultural Leader.Suttur Mutt seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami underscored the enduring relevance of Basavanna's message of unity and human dignity. On the occasion, the foundation stone was laid for the Basavanna statue planned in front of the DC's office.
